Twelth Sunday after pentecost

This week’s texts continue with the idea of Jesus being the Bread of Life. Once again, we’re invited to consider those things that give us life for a day, and the things that lead to eternal life. The Alternate First Reading from 2 Samuel and the Psalm also provide an interesting opportunity to reflect on two of the main experiences of being human - grief and gratitude or joy.

These questions are meant to start a conversation - either during or before worship, in a sermon, a newsletter, Bible Study, or just between a person and their journal.

Gospel: John 6:35, 41-51

How is Jesus like bread? What other metaphors for Jesus have been meaningful to you in your journey of faith?

1st Reading: 1 Kings 19:4-8

In this story, the prophet, Elijah, is worn down body and soul. In the wilderness, God provides food and rest. Have you ever been worn down in that way? What allowed you to continue?

Alternate 1st Reading: 2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33

This is a challenging passage as David learns his son has been killed in battle. We can imagine the complexity of his feelings at this moment. On the one hand, his son was trying to lead a revolt against him that now is failed, but on the other hand, David grieves the loss of his son. Can you identify with a grief that is complex?

Psalm 34:1-8

This psalm is attributed to David who, in this psalm, sings gratitude and joy for all God has done for him. He invites others to join him in this praise. It’s quite a different sentiment than the 2 Samuel reading. Is there a time you felt God heard your cry? How did you express your gratitude?

2nd Reading: Ephesians 4:25-5:2

How do you strive to be an imitator of God in your life?
