Start a Lectionary Conversation - July 28, 2024
Tenth Sunday after pentecost
I’m trying a new thing! As a bit of a spiritual discipline, I’m going to offer discussion questions for each weekly Revised Common Lectionary reading. You can use these in lots of ways - send them in an enewsletter ahead of worship to get people thinking (and talking!) about that week’s scripture. Invite people to chat about the questions in the time before worship, or use them for a quick and easy Bible Study.
Let’s give it a whirl!
Gospel: John 6:1-21
Have you ever been worried you didn’t have enough to feed a group? Maybe it was your family at a holiday or celebration or a crowd at a church event. How did you feel? What happened?
1st Reading: 2 Kings 4:42-44
This reading really compliments the Gospel reading. It reiterates that God’s love and care for us is abundant. There are always leftovers. How or when have you experienced that abundant love in your life?
Alternate 1st Reading: 2 Samuel 11:1-15
Bathsheba has no agency in this story. She is an object of David’s lust, and, given her place in society and his, she is unable to consent to having sex with him. Can you think of people in your community or in the world who experience similar vulnerability?
How does Creation give thanks to God? How do you give thanks to God?
2nd Reading: Ephesians 3:14-21
This is Paul’s prayer for the church in Ephesus. What is your prayer for your community of faith? What would you want your siblings in faith to know about God?
